Over the many years we have been operating Kilimanjaro climbs we have noted that many trekkers (actually, over 30%), particularly e, who decide the long Kilimanjaro climbing programs (over 8 days in duration) do feel only minor symptoms, or no symptoms at all as their bodies get adapted to the altitude. The process is almost unnoticeable to them.

Acclimatization process of a human being

As mentioned above, your brain starts sending signals that something is wrong, once you enter the zone of abnormal altitude, and the body’s defense system should be marshaled to ensure protection. The neurological system of humans is very sophisticated – it fathoms that for some reason we should continue ascending, and instead of ‘ordering’ the body to descend, it begins to prepare it for surviving in the decompressed atmosphere.

It is only when our brain senses that our bodies cannot develop new mechanisms and adaptations to cope with low oxygen levels – it signals that there is no other option, but to descend immediately (see ‘strong symptoms of AMS below).

The elements of adaptation to high altitude

Our bodies have four main techniques for getting adapted to the shortage of oxygen molecules in the air. thus, as you ascend , the following changes will likely take place in your body:

It has also been noted that, acclimatization time is also different on different routes. Generally y, the steeper the route is – the more time for acclimatization will be required. For instance, success rate on Lemosho 6-day programs is much higher than on 6-day Umbwe route adventures. Our universal advice to all our prospective trekkers is to take longer programs in order to make your acclimatization transition smoother and less noticeable.

Why taking a long Kilimanjaro climbing program is better

Based on the above information, we normally ask our trekkers to consider 7, 8 and 9-day climbing programs because of the altitude adaptation zone concept.

The concept of acclimatization zone refers to a certain altitude span, where you not feel the symptoms of altitude sickness.

First acclimatization zone for most people is 3000 m/9842 f – 3800/12467f. The Rules of Good Acclimatization

People who are diabetic or are allergic to sulphur drugs should NEVER TAKE DIAMOX. We highly recommend 7/8/9 day climb programs, If you have not been to any other high-altitude (above 5,000 m) during the past three months.

Choose one of the beginners-friendly climbing routes. Our top recommendation for that is Lemosho Route.

If you are climbing for the first time, we recommend that you take a program that sticks to the “walk high – sleep low” idea, this means that during the day you climb to a higher point than where your overnight camp is located. If you are not travelling with African Safaris Bub – make sure that the itinerary given to you by your climb outfitter follows this principle.

Regardless of your fitness level, always remember to walk at a slow pace – Always avoid overexerting yourself. It is common for many people of ordinary fitness level reaching the summit successfully and without any distress, while professional athletes, who rush forward to show how tough they are, have been ultimately evacuated by the emergency service. Always remember climbing a mountain is not a competition, and there is no place for ‘who will reach the first’ bets here.

Drink much water. Dehydration at high altitudes is a big issue. Sometimes, when climbing a mountain, you may not feel thirst, but increased water intake is vital for your body there. We recommend a minimum of 3-4 litres per day is for an adult.

Eat well: It is common to experience lack of appetite when climbing a mountain. However, you should be aware that the process of adaptation to a high altitude is very energy-consuming. Trekking is a strenuous activity that results in your body burning thousands of calories per day to support intensified breathing activity, the extra development of red blood cells and other vital biological processes. You can take Diamox whenever offered by your mountain guide, however as mentioned above you should not be diabetic or allergic to sulphur drugs. It is advisable to check with your doctor whether it is okay to take Diamox before you attempt the climb. If you are okay to take the drug we recommend that you take it from the first day of your trek and two times per day. Ensure that you take it in the morning and before lunch. To spare you from midnight visits to the washroom, you should daily dose of 14:00, as Diamox is known to be diuretic

We ensure that our mountain guides undergo the necessary training and attain mandatory. All our mountain guides are Wilderness First Responders and Wilderness First Aid certificates holders. These are the most renowned expertise evaluation systems for outdoor guiding professionals.

During low season, in conjunction with relevant professionals, we always organize regular proficiency workshops and qualification master-classes for our guides. Our guides attend special training sessions at least after every 6 months. Renowned Expedition leaders from North America give lectures. Everyone has to pass a test upon completion

Selective hiring: We organize intensive 2 year boot camp for all our chief and assistant guides. They have to undergo this training before we can consider them to lead our groups.

We carry two health check- ups each day per client. We also use pulse oximeter to monitor oxygen saturation in client’s blood. We keep a special medical hard for each climber to record the daily health status, medication taken and other measures. Your health is of our most important concern.

The outcomes of insufficient acclimatization

NOTE We want to make it clear that, the information below is not meant to scare you but to make sure that, we are taking all possible precautions to make sure that your stay within the acclimatization zone is enough before ascending further. You can rest assured that our mountain guide have been trained to react to any emergencies.

We feel we have the responsibility of letting you know what may happen, and why listening to the instructions of your mountain guide is necessary.

We have already stressed how important is to acclimatize. For the climbers who fail to properly acclimatize they may be exposed to a condition known as Acute Mountain Sickness or high-altitude sickness. When respiratory and cardiovascular systems are not ready for low oxygen saturation yet, the symptoms of AMS emerge.

In addition to guiding you on the mountain, the most important task of your guide is to regularly monitor you and determine whether the symptoms that you may experience are part of the signals of ongoing acclimatization transition, or the results of Acute Mountain Sickness. Small headaches and mild fatigue may show that your body is actively working on the adaptation, however, very strong pain and vomiting may signal that you are much above your acclimatization zone, and, as a result, you are already affected by AMS. By making some examinations and observations, your guide will make the final decision on whether you should finish your trek and go down.

Acute Mountain Sickness may take two forms:

High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE)

Abnormal amounts of body fluids accumulated in the lungs leads to HAPE. This conditions effectively hinders the process of CO2 exchange and distribution through the blood vessels. HAPE is extremely dangerous, and evacuation is necessary in all HAPE cases.

The symptoms of HAPE include physical exhaustion, difficulty in breathing in, coughing with white, foamy fluids and unreasonable behavior (sometimes).

When the guides have confirmed that you are indeed suffering from HAPE, their first reaction would be to attach an oxygen mask to administer relieving medication. Then, evacuation will follow with use of special stretchers start. Upon descent, professional medical advice is necessary.

High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE)

When the fluids accumulate on the brain tissues, it swells and this leads to a condition called HACE, needless to say all HACE cases require immediate evacuation.

The most common symptoms of HACE include Fainting, clouded consciousness, excruciating headache, exhaustion and poor coordination are the most common symptoms of HACE . This condition mainly occurs at night. Our highly and skilled mountain guides are trained to diagnose the earliest stages of HACE development, but you are strongly advised to report any suspicions you may have to your guide so that necessary action may be taken.

This Kilimanjaro trekking is rated Strenuous. You should be strong and in excellent physical condition. Previous experience hiking at high altitude will be an asset to your chances of summiting on Kilimanjaro. Your physical fitness is important to your success on the climb. Start with hiking the hills for the legs, swimming to increase lung capacity and circulation, jogging and bicycling for overall fitness, these are excellent for building the strength necessary for the trek. High Altitude:

At 19,340, the summit of Kilimanjaro even with a rest day, the climb has rapid rate of ascent. At African Safaris Hub we attempt to minimize the effects of altitude through our unique program of acclimatization. You might experience some symptoms of altitude illness during the climb. These symptoms may include headache, nausea, loss of appetite, difficulty in breathing and general weakness. More severe reactions can include both cerebral and pulmonary edema, which can result in permanent injury or death. The only cure is to descend. Our mount Kilimanjaro guides are highly trained and they are quick to notice in your health and the necessary steps to take.

Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro:

One thing you should be aware of is that, the weather on Kilimanjaro is quite diverse and unpredictable. On this route, in a wide belt of wet tropical forest that is where your climb will start. You will then go through zones with generally decreasing temperatures and rainfall to the summit where there is permanent ice and sub-freezing temperatures. Our Kilimanjaro treks avoid the long rainy season which runs from mid – March to May .

Mount Kilimanjaro Packing List:

This personal accessories/clothing list is meant to help guide you in selecting appropriate gear for your Mt. Kilimanjaro Trek, the right gear is essential part of your climb:

insulated, waterproof hiking boots with rigid uppers and thick soles
(Boots must be WELL BROKEN )

  • 3 pair of warm socks
  • 3 pair of lightweight socks (to wear under warm socks)
  • 1 or 2 pair of lightweight walking or running shoes for walking around camp (with appropriate socks
  • 1 warm hat (or balaclava) with brim to keep the sun off face and neck and a sun hat (you will need both types)
  • 1 pair of insulated hiking or ski gloves
  • 1 down-filled, hooded parka or goretex anorak
  • 2 sets of thermal underwear (preferably a lightweight pair to wear next to the skin and a heavier second pair for extra warmth)
  • 1 pair of warm, windproof slacks
  • 1 pair of lightweight slacks
  • 1 pair of shorts
  • 2 woolen or flannel shirts with long sleeves
  • 1 or 2 warm sweaters (fleece-type)
  • 2 lighter-weight shirts (or tee shirts)
  • 3 or 4 sets of underwear
  • Lightweight rain gear with hood (Rain can occur at any time on the lower slopes.)
  • Lightweight personal water container
  • A water purification kit and/or iodine pills
  • In addition to a duffle bag that will be carried by your porter, you should bring a lightweight daypack for carrying your own water, lunch, camera, film, etc.; (A pack that has a hydration system with an insulated water bladder is suggested.)Your duffle bag should be of medium-size, sturdy duffel bag to contain all your gear and clothing (Porters will carry this for you, but they will NOT carry framed backpacks.)During the day you will not have access to your duffle bag, all the items you need during the day should be in your daypack.

A good sleeping bag is the key to staying warm and dry when you’re crashing under the stars. A well-insulated sleeping bag is recommended. It should be suitable for temperatures of 20-degrees Fahrenheit.( It should fit in your duffel bag.)

Emergency foil blanket (optional)
Flashlight/torch (with extra batteries); a light weight head lamp will be especially useful for the last part of the climb, which is done at night

  • Pair of mud gaiters
  • Dark sunglasses with high UV ray protection or snow goggles
    (Polarising glasses are not sufficient to prevent snow blindness.)
  • Sunscreen with high SPF
  • Lip balm containing a sun block
  • Small hand towel, soap, and 2 rolls of toilet paper
  • Tissue and “wash and dry” wipes
  • UV filter for your camera (which is necessary for high-altitude photography)
  • High-energy snacks (such as muesli bars, chocolate, or instant hot drinks)
  • A small reference book on plants (if you are interested in botany )
    IN ADDITION to personal climbing gear, we advise you to contact your doctor who will advise on the type of a small medical kit you should assemble and specific items to include. The following items may be useful:
  • A good supply of aspirin (for altitude headaches)
  • Altitude medication – as prescribed by your doctor
  • An antibiotic to use if needed (such as Septra DS) as prescribed by your doctor
  • Anti-biotic cream (for cuts and scrapes)
  • Band-aids and bandages
  • Moleskin scissors, tweezers, and a thermometer
  • Cold/flu tablets and throat lozenges
  • Medicine for stomach ailments and rehydration salts
    We suggest that you carry various types of clothing that are appropriate and are of various weights, as you will want to dress in layers (Using more or fewer layers, or replacing one layer but not others, allows for flexible clothing to match the needs of each situation). During the first two days of your climb, you may find it comfortable to wear shorts and tee shirts. However, as you go higher, temperatures will change. By the third day of your climb, it can be very windy and the temperature can fall to freezing at night.

A limited selection of equipment is available for rental; however, African Safaris Hub cannot guarantee the quality or condition of any items rented locally. It is, therefore, suggested that you bring all of your own equipment.

Baggage information

During a climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro, we recommend that you plan to travel with only what is required for your climb. (You can leave your excess luggage behind in Arusha/or Moshi and claim after the climb.)

As has already been mentioned above, porters will carry only duffel-type bags during the climb (avoid framed backpacks or suitcases). You need only carry a daypack with the personal items you will require during the day (your personal supply of water, your lunch, your camera and film, and any clothes you may want to put on or discard). Your passport, money, and permit papers should be kept with you at all times during the climb and also carried in your daypack. You will not have access to items in your duffle bag until the end of each day as the porters will always be ahead of the group.

Information on Laundry

We suggest that you take a sufficient amount of clean clothing for the duration of the climb as Laundry service is NOT available during a climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro.
